ATC's Annual Spring Gift Book Program will begin Tuesday, May 13 and continue through Sunday, June 1, 2008. As in the past, each student will be given $15 worth of books chosen by his or her ATC tutor. ATC's Board of Directors has chosen Tree Top Kids Bookstore to provide the books which will be available for purchase through the Elizabeth Stone Gallery in Old Town Alexandria.
ATC Tutors may visit the Gallery, located at 1127 King Street, Tuesdays - Saturdays from Noon - 6:00 p.m., and Sundays from Noon - 5:00 p.m. Metered street parking is available, as is free street parking at North Fayette and Cameron Streets. Visit www.elizabethstonegallery.com and http://treetopkids.com for more information. The Gallery phone number is 703-706-0025. For questions on the program, please contact Claudia Barnett at atc@opmh.org.
ATC's Second Annual Literacy Week, April 14 - 18, was a huge success! Children's author and illustrator Susan Stockdale, and children's author Leslie Young brought the joy of reading and delighted the more than 400 first and second graders attending the programs at Patrick Henry and William Ramsay Elementary Schools, and at Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics. ATC sponsored this annual week long event part of its mission to bring first and second graders up to or above grade level in reading.
We are in the process of updating ATC's 2007-2008 Volunteer Survey to be more concise and user-friendly. Once the survey is complete, we will post it on ATC's website: www.alexandriatutors.org. The survey is an important ATC tool to ensure that all tutors receive the support and assistance they need from ATC and ACPS staff. Please take the time to complete the survey online when it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have suggestions, contact Claudia Barnett at atc@opmh.org.
As the ACPS school year draws to a close, ATC is starting to look forward! We hope you will tutor again next year and we are always looking for additional community members who love children, reading, and have the desire to serve! If you know of any potential tutors, please refer them to our website to fill out an application. If you plan to continue tutoring in the fall, please contact Claudia Barnett at atc@opmh.org.
As summer approaches, encourage your tutee to continue reading! Encourage your tutees to visit Alexandria's public libraries, and even suggest getting their own library card! For ideas on summer reading and additional resources for your tutees, visit the ACPS website http://www.acps.k12.va.us. The site is filled with excellent educational information, and even online computer games designed to enhance learning.
